Obstacle recognition is a critical function in modern AI-driven systems, especially in applications such as autonomous vehicles, traffic management, and smart cities. This technology enables machines to perceive and identify objects or obstacles in their environment, making informed decisions in real-time. The ability to recognize obstacles like vehicles, pedestrians, animals, or static objects at intersections is essential for improving road safety and efficiency in urban areas. Given the complexity of real-world environments, obstacle recognition algorithms must be fast, accurate, and efficient, particularly when deployed on edge devices like the Jetson Nano Orin 8GB.

AI Technologies for Obstacle Recognition on Jetson Nano Orin 8GB

The Jetson Nano Orin 8GB is a powerful edge computing platform capable of running complex AI algorithms for real-time object detection and classification. In the context of obstacle recognition, this board allows the deployment of state-of-the-art object detection models such as YOLOv8 and SSD (Single Shot Multibox Detector), which are optimized for high accuracy and low inference time. These models are key to identifying objects in video streams captured from multiple cameras monitoring an intersection.

Thanks to its GPU and AI acceleration capabilities, the Jetson Nano Orin can handle the computationally intensive tasks of processing camera feeds, detecting obstacles, and providing real-time feedback. This makes it an ideal choice for projects requiring low-latency inference at the edge, where sending data to the cloud for processing is either impractical or too slow.

The Edge of Advantage: Why Choose Edge AI?

Edge AI technologies are transforming various industries by enabling real-time data processing and decision-making directly on devices located at the edge of networks, rather than relying on centralized cloud servers. Here are some key ways edge AI technologies contribute to obstacle recognition and similar applications:

  • Real-Time Processing: Edge AI devices like the Jetson Nano enable fast, real-time obstacle detection without delays from cloud processing, crucial for tasks like traffic control and robotics.
  • Reduced Bandwidth: By processing data locally, edge AI reduces the need to send video streams to the cloud, minimizing bandwidth usage and ensuring reliable performance in areas with poor connectivity.
  • Privacy and Security: Local data processing enhances privacy by reducing the risk of sensitive information being intercepted, important in public applications like smart cities and surveillance.
  • Energy Efficiency: Edge AI systems consume less power, making them ideal for continuous, cost-effective operation without relying on expensive cloud computation.
  • Scalability: Edge AI allows for flexible deployment across multiple intersections, with devices making local decisions and improving overall system efficiency.
  • Resilience: Local processing ensures systems continue functioning during internet outages, maintaining obstacle detection even in critical applications like traffic management.

Challenges of Implementing Edge AI for Obstacle Recognition

Edge AI technologies offer numerous advantages, there are also several challenges that need to be addressed when deploying them for obstacle recognition in real-time environments like intersections. Some of the key challenges include:

The EdgeAI advantage and the role of Harokopio University of Athens

Our contribution focuses on developing a robust obstacle recognition system capable of properly detecting imminent dangers on top of an embedded AI platform such as Jetson Nano Orin equipped with a 360 camera, in real-time. We leverage the memory friendly Yolov8n computer vision model for multi object detection while streaming a video. This offers high accuracy, targeting critical KPIs such as precision, inference time and false positives.

Our system is optimized to handle the complex dynamics of intersections, identifying vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and other potential obstacles. Through edge AI technologies, we reduce network dependence and bandwidth usage by performing all computations locally. However the latency when transferring the frames from the camera to the model still remains. Our video processing mechanism which is based upon creating batches of frames is optimized to handle efficiently and concurrently multiple frames per second while keeping track of the objects the model detects.

Moreover, our solution is designed to be scalable, meaning it can be deployed across multiple intersections to enhance traffic safety and management. With low power consumption and cost-efficient hardware, our obstacle recognition system is ideal for smart city applications, offering flexibility, reliability, and efficiency in managing traffic flow and preventing accidents.
