In everyday language the word exploitation often carries a negative connotation. But in the world of EU-funded R&I projects the opposite is true, it represents a significant step toward positive change.
In research and technology, we often celebrate innovations and breakthroughs. In the EdgeAI project, for instance, we celebrate creating new frameworks that embed intelligence at the edge, developing low-power, real-time, energy-efficient AI hardware and software that can operate across the edge continuum.
But what happens next?
There is a quieter force that determines whether those innovations and breakthroughs have the potential to truly implement and sustain change: exploitation.
At EdgeAI we see exploitation as the bridge between research and real-world impact. This means ensuring that important results are acted upon well beyond the project’s lifetime. It’s a challenge, but when so much effort and expertise go into developing cutting-edge solutions, letting them sit unused would be a missed opportunity.
What is exploitation, and why does it matter?

In EU-funded research, exploitation is the process of ensuring that the results, whether technologies, knowledge, or tools, are used effectively beyond the lifetime of a project. As defined by the European Commission, exploitation helps research reach its full potential by translating it into innovation, policy, or further research. It’s the step that transforms project outputs into outcomes and impact. Exploitation efforts are aimed towards making concrete use of project’s results for commercial, societal and political purposes. The wide range of stakeholders who can benefit from exploitation actions range from researchers, stakeholders, Industry, including SMEs, public authorities, policymakers to civil society. It is a legal obligation for a good reason: project results can contribute to developing, creating, marketing, or improving a product or process; to creating and providing a service; to supporting standardisation activities; or to shaping policy.
For EdgeAI, where intelligence is being pushed closer to the point of data generation, the potential impact is substantial: more secure, energy-efficient, real-time systems for the digital industry, energy, agri-food and beverage, mobility, and digital society
How does EdgeAI approach exploitation and the role of CONVERGENCE

CONVERGENCE leads exploitation efforts in EdgeAI and coordinates a structured, evolving process to help partners identify, track, and maximise the real-world use of their work.
This process includes:
- Distributing tailored exploitation questionnaires during key milestones of the project to collect input across the consortium
- Supporting the identification of Key Exploitable Results (KERs)
- Mapping potential users/stakeholders, markets, and impact pathways
- Designing Business Model and Value Proposition Canvases to support future uptake
- Creating robust mechanisms for continuous monitoring and evaluation of exploitation activities, including mitigation measures, throughout the project lifecycle
This methodology is iterative, human-centred, and grounded in feedback from those doing the real work. It is designed to remain relevant and adaptable as the project and the broader market evolve.
What have we seen so far?
The present phase of exploitation planning has already produced valuable insights:
- Exploitation interest is high, with most organisations expressing strong motivation to apply their work commercially, scientifically, or both.
- The EdgeAI project is expected to lead to benefits such as process improvements, cost savings, faster time-to-market, and new partnerships across multiple sectors, from energy to agriculture.
- Exploitation efforts also support ecosystem building, job creation, and long-term collaboration within and beyond the consortium.
At CONVERGENCE, we believe that human-centred, socially informed approaches are key to successful innovation. The pathway from research to application must be strategically robust, but equally, it must also be sustainable.
The exploitation plan for EdgeAI is designed to focus on intelligent processing solutions at the edge, enhancing security, and ensuring energy efficiency. At the same time, it emphasises both commercial and scientific exploitation, while recognising the importance of translating research into practical applications, into tools, knowledge, and systems that can serve society.
Exploitation shouldn’t be seen as a legal obligation or a bureaucratic step. When conceptualised and implemented strategically, it substantially contributes to making research matter.
